Alabama Insurance CE Requirements

Insurance Continuing Education Hours Required

  • 12 CE hours needed annually
  • Producers will move to a biennial renewal cycle.  The new CE requirement for a biennial license period will be 24 hours, 3 hours which must be Ethics.
  • Producers or service representatives who do not do outside sales, and who do not hold a nonresident license in any other state, must complete six hours annually including 1 hour of Ethics annually.

Insurance Continuing Education State Specific Courses

  • 3 hours must be in Ethics
  • All Alabama licensed resident insurance producers who sell federal flood insurance policies shall be required to complete a one time 3 hour requirement on flood insurance.

Insurance Continuing Education Renewal or Compliance Date for Licensees

  • Licensees who were born in odd years will renew their license in 2007 for a 2 year period which will expire at the end of their birth month in 2009 and biennially thereafter. The CE requirement will be 24 hours, with 3 hours in ethics.
  • Licensees who were born in even years will renew their license in 2007 for one year and again in 2008 for two years, then biennially thereafter. Since the transition renewal cycle for licensees born in even years will only be for a one year period, these individuals will be required to complete only 12 hours of continuing education, including 1.5 hours of ethics to renew in 2008.

Insurance Continuing Education Types of Courses Accepted

  • Independent self-study courses and classroom study/ seminar.

Monitor Requirements

  • Online & paper exams MUST BE monitored by a disinterested third party.

Insurance Continuing Education Carryover Hours & Course Repetition

  • Up to 12 hours can be carried over to the next renewal period.
  • Courses may not be taken for credit more than once per period. 

Exemptions

  • Individuals who are at least 60 years of age and have been licensed continuously in for at least 15 years.
  • Individuals who are CLUs, CPCUs, CICs, ChFCs, CFPs, RHUs, REBCs, CHCs or ARMs.
  • Individuals licensed only for lines of insurance for which a license exam is not required.
  • Individuals licensed only for automobile physical damage insurance, industrial fire (debt free) insurance and/or physical damage coverage on household goods.
  • Insurance company officer who are not engaged in the active sale of products
  • Individuals licensed less than one year at the time of the first CE compliance date are exempt for that first reporting period.

Method to Certify Completion:

  • For Most States you will be able to print your certificate of completion online once you have completed your exam.

 

  • We usually report to the State Department of Insurance or regulatory board by the next business day.

 

  • It may, however, take your State DOI or regulatory board up to 30 days to report your completion results on their systems
