California Insurance Continuing Education (CE) Courses

State Proctor/Monitor Requirements:

• No proctor required for California insurance continuing education.

CA Insurance Continuing Education Online Renewal Requirements:

• No proctor required for California insurance continuing education.
• California Life insurance continuing education agents or Accident & Health Agents: 24 hours every 2 years, 4 hours of which must be in Ethics.
• Fire and Casualty Agents:
• If licensed Less than 4 years: 25 California insurance continuing education hours each year for the first 4 years, 4 hours of which must be in Ethics every 2 years.
• If licensed 4 years or more: 24 California insurance continuing education hours every 2 years, 4 hours of which must be in Ethics.
• Life, Health and Fire Casualty Agent Combined License:
• If licensed Less than 4 years: 25 California insurance continuing education hours each year for the first 4 years, 4 hours of which must be in Ethics every 2 years.
• If licensed 4 years or more: 30 California Insurance CE hours every 2 years, 4 hours of which must be in Ethics.

State Specific (required) Courses:

• California Insurance CE courses must be approved for lines of insurance for which license is held.
• Ethics Requirement: All agents are required to complete 4 hours of Ethics every 2 years. Excess Ethics hours may not be carried forward to the next renewal.
• Annuity 8 Hour Requirement: Agents who sell annuities must complete a one-time 8-hour approved Annuity Training course prior to selling annuities.
• Annuity 4 Hour Requirement: Agents continuing to sell annuities must complete a 4-hour approved CA insurance continuing education Annuity course for each subsequent renewal.
• Long Term Care: Individuals who sell long-term care products in California must complete 8 hours of California insurance continuing education LTC annually for the first 4 years, then 8 hours every 2 years thereafter.
• Flood Requirement: All agents who sell federal flood insurance policies must complete a one-time 3-hour flood insurance course.

California Insurance CE License Renewal Timelines:

• The renewal date is the last day of the license issuance month, every 2 years. The department of insurance requires agents to pay a $65 late fee if California insurance continuing education is completed late.
