Maryland Insurance CE Requirements

Insurance Continuing Education Hours Required:

  • Effective October 1, 2009 - 24 CE hours required biennially, 3 of which should be in Ethics.
  • 8 hours biennially for agents with 25 years or more of experience as a licensed agent in Maryland.  Correspondence courses may constitute no more than 50% of the required credit hours Maryland resident licensees.

Continuing Education State Specific Courses:

  • Agents must be approved for lines of insurance for which license is held. 
  • Renewing before October 1, 2009, 16 hours of CE is required.  For license renewed on or after October 1, 2009, 24 hrs of CE will be required; including 3 hours of ethics training.  Resident licensees can only take 50% of the required CE hours via self-study courses.
  • LH/PC combined licensees must complete 4 hours in each LH and PC.
  • Individuals wishing to sell Long Term Care must complete 8-hours of approved LTC education prior to selling and then 4-hours biennially thereafter. The 8-hours & 4-hours counts towards the CE requirement.
  • All P/C Producers who sell Homeowners Insurance ONLY must complete 2 CE credits in Flood Insurance by Sept. 30, 2007 for a one time requirement.
  • All P/C Producers who sell Flood Insurance ONLY must complete 2 CE credits in Flood Insurance by Sept. 30, 2006 and 2 hours must be completed each renewal period thereafter.
  • Producers who sell BOTH Homeowners and Flood Insurance need only to take d2 hours on Flood Insurance by Sept. 30, 2006 for a one time requirement.  The 2 hours will satisfy the one time requirement for Producers selling Homeowners Insurance and for the renewal period for Producers selling Flood Insurance.
  • Producers who have held a license for 25 consecutive years; as of October 1, 2008 must completed 8 hours of CE per renewal period, including ethics.  

 Renewal or Compliance Date for Licensees:

  • License renewal date is license issuance date biennially
  • Compliance date is one day prior to license renewal.

Types of Courses Accepted:

  • Independent self-study courses, classroom or insurer-sponsored courses.

Monitor Requirements

  • Exams DO NOT require a monitor.

Continuing Education Carryover Hours & Course Repetition

  • No excess CE credit hours may be carried over to the next reporting period.
  • Credit will not be give for a course that is repeated within a 2 year period. If the course is taken in 2 consecutive reporting periods, there must be 6 months between completion dates.

Exemptions:

  • Individuals licensed less than 1 year at the time of the compliance date.
  • Individuals who hold a credit life, credit health, or travel license.
  • Agents who are 70 years of age or older.
  • Individuals who have held their license for 25 consecutive years are required to fulfill 8 CE hours.
  • Individuals acting as instructors for continuing education courses receive 1 and ½ times the approved credit hours for teaching a course.

Method to Certify Completion:

  • For Most States you will be able to print your certificate of completion online once you have completed your exam.

  • We usually report to the State Department of Insurance or regulatory board by the next business day.

  • It may, however, take your State DOI or regulatory board up to 30 days to report your completion results on their systems.

Nonresidents:

            Exempt, except for the Long Term Care Training Program Requirement
