Michigan State Insurance Continuing Education Requirements

Insurance Continuing Education Hours Required

  • 24 hours are required biennially.

State Specific Courses

  • 3 hours must be in ethics.

  • Agents selling, soliciting, or negotiating long-term care insurance must complete an initial 8 hour course on Long Term Care insurance and 4 hours on Long Term Care every two years thereafter.

Renewal or Compliance Date for Licensees

  • **NEW** Effective January 1st, 2010: Licensees with dates of birth in odd years will have CE due the first day of their birth month every two years in all odd years. Licensees with dates of birth in even years will have CE due the first day of their birth month every two years in all even years.

  • (Before 12/31/2009) Agents whose last names begin with A-L renew in odd-numbered years.
  • (Before 12/31/2009) Agents whose last names begin with M-Z renew in even-numbered years.
  • Biennial compliance date is determined by the last digit of the license number (Social Security Number) and the first letter of agent’s last name.

Types of Courses Accepted

  • Independent self-study courses and classroom.

Monitor Requirements

  • Exams MUST BE monitored by a disinterested third party.

Carryover Hours & Course Repetition

  • No excess Insurance Continuing Education credit hours may be carried over to the next reporting period.

  • Courses may not be taken for credit more than once in each reporting period.

Exemptions

  • Individuals licensed only for one or more of the following lines: Credit Products, Limited Life, Turkey, Crop & Hail, Travel, Accident and/or Baggage, and/or Title.

  • Individuals licensed 23 months or less at the time of the first Insurance Continuing Education compliance date are exempt for that first reporting period.

  • Individuals who apply for and receive a hardship waiver for terminal illness of self or of immediate family member who requires an ordinate amount of care by licensee or military duty.

Method to Certify Completion:

  • For Most States you will be able to print your certificate of completion online once you have completed your exam.
  • We usually report to the State Department of Insurance or regulatory board by the next business day.
  • It may, however, take your State DOI or regulatory board up to 30 days to post your completion results on their systems.
  • As an added service, we can Rapidly Report all of your completed courses the same business day (per credit order) for only $25.

Nonresidents:

Exempt if producer meets home state Insurance Continuing Education requirement. If producer does not meet home state Insurance Continuing Education requirement, producer must comply with Michigan’s Insurance Continuing Education requirement.
