North Carolina Insurance CE Requirements
New Insurance Continuing Education Hours
Beginning 1/1/2008
All Agents are required to complete 24 Insurance Continuing Education credit hours, 3 of which must be in Ethics required every two years. In 2008 and 2009, existing licensees’Insurance Continuing Education hours will be prorated based upon the birth month and birth year (odd/even) of the licensee. After the first compliance period a licensee must meet his/her 24 Insurance Continuing Education credit hours requirement each biennial period based on his/her birth month and birth year. Course Subject Requirements
- 3 hours of total Insurance Continuing Education CE credits hours must be completed in Ethics
- Each person holding a property and liability, personal lines, or adjuster license shall complete a continuing education course on flood insurance and the National Flood Insurance Program within two years after January 1, 2008, and every four years thereafter.
- Adjusters and Agents who hold one or more of the following licenses: Property, Casualty, Personal Lines, Life, Accident/Health and Variable Life/Variable Annuity Products may complete their 24 Insurance Continuing Education credit hours requirement by taking courses in any line of authority.
Renewal or Compliance Date for Licensees
- No license renewals in this state. License is perpetual as long as agent does not go more than 1 year without a valid appointment and meets CE requirement.
- Compliance date is new and biennial
Types of Courses Accepted
- Independent self study courses or classroom.
Monitor Requirements
- Online exams DO NOT require a monitor. Correspondence courses are required to be monitored by a disinterested third party.
Carryover Hours & Course Repetition
- Single/Dual License: excess hours may be carried over to the next reporting period
- A course may NOT be taken for credit more than once within a 2 year license term.
Exemptions:
- Newly licensed individuals are exempt for the calendar year in which the license is issued.
- Individuals who are at least 65 years of age, have been licensed continuously for at least 25 years, and either a) hold a CLU, CPCU, ChFC, FLMI or IIA designation, or b) certify that they are inactive insurance agency owners who neither solicit applications for insurance nor take part in the day-to-day operation of the agency.
Method to Certify Completion:
- For Most States you will be able to print your certificate of completion online once you have completed your exam.
- We usually report to the State Department of Insurance or regulatory board by the next business day.
- It may, however, take your State DOI or regulatory board up to 30 days to report your completion results on their systems.

Nonresidents:
Exempt if licensee meets home state Insurance Continuing Education requirement. Licensee must submit filing fee to the insurance department by March 1.
Nonresident adjusters can complete 12 hours of property/ casualty courses approved by their home state.
