Alberta Insurance CE Requirements

ALBERTA Insurance CE Requirements
Continuing Education Hours
All certificates holders will be required to have 15 hours of credits annually.

Agents who become licensed for the first time in the first nine months of any certificate term are required to obtain CE credits. The number of hours required is calculated on a pro-rated basis (1.25/licensed month) in accordance with a formula established by the regulation. Agents who become licensed in the final three months of a certificate term are not required to obtain credits for that year only.

Continuing Education Compliance and Renewal Date
The requirements for the reporting of continuing education credits has been amended to coincide with the following renewal dates:
Insurance Adjusters – June 30, 2014
General Insurance Agents – June 30, 2014
Life and Accident and Sickness Insurance Agents – June 30, 2014

Effective July 1, 2014, certificate term means the period beginning on July 1 and ending on next June 30.

The Alberta Insurance Council (AIC) will conduct random audits to determine that certificate holders are in compliance with these requirements. All Certificate holders must retain copies of their CE certificates.

Type of courses accepted for CE Credit
Level 1 Life agents are ONLY allowed to take portions of the LLQP (15 hours)to satisfy your continuing education requirements.  Continuing education credits from other sources will not be accepted. In addition, you must also complete 15 hours to satisfy your A&S license. These courses must be approved by the Alberta Insurance Council.

Level 2/LLQP Certificate Holders, CE may be satisfied by completing any course which has been approved by the AIC.

Please refer to each course for specific accreditation

Carryover Requirements
Producers may carry forward up to 7.5 hours of credit from one term to the next.

Course Repetition
Courses cannot be repeated unless the content has been updated from the time the agent completed the course originally.

Insurance CE Course Exam
Course exam is open book and does not require a monitor.

Requirements to Maintain Records
An individual who holds a certificate of authority must keep a record issued by a continuing education provider respecting the continuing education courses completed by the individual during that certificate term.
The records must be kept for a period of 3 years following the expiry of the certificate term and must be provided to the Minister upon request.
If the individual does not provide the records within 30 days after receiving a request from the Minister, the certificate of authority is suspended until the demand is complied with.
The Alberta Insurance Council is implementing a mandatory on-line renewal system. Certificate(s) may be renewed online at the AIC website
www.abcouncil.ab.ca . Agents and adjusters will not be permitted to renew their certificate unless sufficient CE credits have been entered online.

Non-Resident Agents and Adjusters
Non-resident agents and adjusters are not required to complete Alberta continuing education requirements if the Minister is satisfied that the non-residents home jurisdiction has a satisfactory continuing education requirement for each class of Alberta certificate of authority that the non-resident holds, and the agent /adjuster has taken the necessary course(s) to meet those requirements.

Non-resident agents/adjusters must have completed the continuing education requirements of their home jurisdiction to be exempt from the Alberta requirement, completing continuing education requirements in another jurisdiction where the agent/adjuster holds a non-resident certificate does not exempt the holder from the Alberta requirements.

The following non-resident jurisdictions have been determined to have a satisfactory continuing education requirement: British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario (RIBO, General), Ontario (FSCO, Life and A&S Only), Quebec, New York, Ohio, Nevada, Michigan, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Washington State and Illinois. This is to say that an agent who has satisfied the requirements for these classes of certificate(s) only would be accepted.
