British Columbia Insurance CE Requirements

BRITISH COLUMBIA Insurance CE Requirements

Continuing Education Hours
For each license year, or portion thereof:

·         If you have an approved designation* you must have 5 technical hours of continuing education; or

·         If you have been licensed as a life insurance agent for at least 5 of the last 7 years in Canadian jurisdiction, and you do not have an approved designation you must have 10 technical hours of continuing education; or

·         If you have not been licensed as a life insurance agent for at least 5 or the last 7 years in a Canadian jurisdiction and you do not have an approved designation you must have 15 technical hours of continuing education.

*Approved Designations: CFP, CLU, RHU, FCIA, FLMI and CEBS. Designation form other countries will be considered where it is demonstrated to Council they are equivalent to one of the approved Canadian designations.

Note:  Some designations (CLU, FCIA and CFP) require the holder to keep the designation in good standing by completing continuing education each year. If you hold a designation and can demonstrate to Council your designation is in good standing, you are "exempt" from Council's continuing education requirements.

Continuing Education Compliance and Renewal Dates
License issuance date annually.

Type of courses accepted for CE Credit
Continuing Education courses can be classroom, online and/or self study.

Course Subject Requirements
Only technical material will qualify for continuing education. Technical education directly relates to:

·         life insurance products;

·         financial planning, provided the education is geared to life insurance and not a non-insurance sector, such as securities or mutual funds;

·         compliance with insurance legislation and requirements such Council's Code of Conduct, Council Rules, the Insurance Act, privacy legislation, anti-terrorism/money laundering legislation;

·         ethics; or

·         errors and omissions

Carryover Requirements
Commencing 01JUNE2008, excess credits cannot be carried over into the next license period.

Course Repetition
Credit will not be given for courses taken more than once in each reporting period, but courses may be repeated in a new license cycle.

Insurance CE Course Exam
Final exam is open book and does not require a monitor.

Requirements to Maintain Records
Agents are required to keep their continuing education certificate for five years from the renewal date the course is completed.  Random audits are conducted. If the agent does not have the supporting documentation, Council may take disciplinary action, including invalidating the licence renewal.  Further information can be obtained at

Non-Residents CE Requirements
If you are a non-resident of British Columbia, you must meet the same requirements as a resident, with some exceptions and additions.

ADVOCIS (formerly CAIFA) Requirements
Continuing Education Hours
Continuing Education (CE) is mandatory for all Advocis members. Members are required to earn a minimum of 30 CE credits each calendar year. Each hour of CE credit approved by Advocis qualifies for CE credit. Any deficiency in one year must be made up by the next year in addition to the full year's requirement. As it is a membership requirement to earn CE credits, those in non-compliance will be subject to sanctions.

·         a minimum of 15 hours of structured learning activity in the form of CE programs. One CE credit equals one hour of structured learning activity.

·         Informal learning activities — a maximum of 15 hours of informal activity determined by the member as contributing to his or her ongoing professional development such as: teaching/presenting, research/writing articles, self-study, and participation on industry task forces/committees.
