Louisiana Insurance CE Requirements


IMPORTANT : The state DOI requires a timed study depending on the course hours before you can complete the exam. 


Insurance Continuing Education Hours Required

All Louisiana CE can now be taken through self-study or online!

 

As of 5/1/2010, beginning with the 2011 P&C biennial renewal cycle, now based on one’s birth month, 24 hours of CE is required, of which 3 must be Ethics.

 

All Life, Accident and Health agents will be required to meet the 24 hours of CE, of which 3 must be Ethics, biennially beginning with the 2012 renewals based on one’s birth month.

  • Life; Accident and Health; or Life, Accident and Health : 24 hours, including 3 hours of Ethics, biennially.
  • Bail Bonds: 12 hours biennially in courses specific to bail bonds
  • Personal Lines-Property and Casualty: 24 hours, including 3 hours of Ethics, biennially.
  • All Lines-L/H and P/C: 24 hours, including 3 hours of Ethics, biennially.

Continuing Education State Specific Courses

  • Producers licensed for Property and Casualty, and/or Personal Lines must complete a one-time 3 hour course on flood insurance.
  • Course subjects must be for lines of insurance in which license is held.
  • Initial 8-hour long term care training requirement: Before selling, soliciting or negotiating LTC insurance products in Louisiana, a producer must have completed eight (8) hours of Louisiana approved initial LTC training.

  • Ongoing 4-hour long term care training requirement: A 4-hour follow-up long term care training course must be completed during each two-year period following the two-year period in which the person completed the initial 8-hour long term care training requirement.


Renewal or Compliance Date for Licensees


Types of Courses Accepted

  • Independent self study courses or classroom.
  • 100% of the requirements may be satisfied through self-study.


Monitor Requirements

  • Exams DO NOT require a monitor. 

Reporting to Your State

  • State Insurance completions are reported 2 times every business day. If course is completed after 2 PM PT, it will be reported the following business day.

  • CFP reports are sent on Friday at 2 PM PT to the CFP Board electronically.

  • You may also self-report your CFP completions to www.cfp.net


Continuing Education Carryover Hours & Course Repetition

  • Excess hours may be carried over to the next renewal period.
  • LH up to 6 excess classroom hours and PC up to 10 classroom excess hours.
  • Courses may not be repeated for credit more than once per renewal period.


Exemptions

  • Newly licensed agents are exempt for the 1st reporting period
  • Individuals with a limited line license for which an exam is not required.
  • Individuals who are licensed for industrial fire insurance only
  • Individuals holding a limited license for one of the following lines: title , fidelity and surety, baggage, credit property, service or burial, travel health and accident, and industrial life, health and accident
  • A licensee who is 65 years of age and had at least 15 years experience as a licensed agent, broker or solicitor and is either:
    • No longer active as an agent, broker or solicitor and is receiving Social Security benefits.
    • Is an active agent who represents or operates through a licensed Louisiana insurer
  • Nonresident agents may be exempt if licensee meets home state CE requirement.


Method to Certify Completion:

  • For Most States you will be able to print your certificate of completion online once you have completed your exam.
  • We usually report to the State Department of Insurance or regulatory board by the next business day.
  • It may, however, take your State DOI or regulatory board up to 30 days to report your completion results on their systems.
