North Dakota Insurance CE Requirements

License Status

Insurance Continuing Education Hours Required:

  • 12 hours are required annually/ 24 hours per biennial reporting period. 

State Specific Insurance Continuing Education Courses:

  • 3 hours must be in ethics.
  • All North Dakota licensed resident insurance producers who sell federal flood insurance policies shall be required to complete a one time 3 hour requirement on flood insurance.
  • 8-hour Initial LTC Partnership Training Requirement: Producers who sell, solicit or negotiate Long-Term Care insurance policies for North Dakota’s LTC Partnership program must complete a one-time 8-hours training program. 
  • 4-hour Follow up LTC Partnership  Training Requirement:  Producers who have completed the 8-hour Initial requirement, must complete a 4-hour LTC Partnership course in order to continue selling Long-Term Care.*

 *A producer who fails to timely complete the four-hour ongoing training will no longer be required to retake the 8-hour initial course.  Instead a producer must complete a 4-hour training course to be considered compliant.

    Last names beginning with L-Z; January 31st of even numbered years

  • Independent self study courses or classroom.

  • Online exams DO NOT require a monitor.   

Reporting to Your State
  • $1.00 per credit hour is required to report to your state.
    • State Insurance completions are reported 2 times every business day. If course is completed after 2 PM PT, it will be reported the following business day.

    • CFP reports are sent on Friday at 2 PM PT to the CFP Board electronically.

Continuing Education Carryover Hours & Course Repetition

  • A maximum if 12 hours, earned only in the second half of the biennial renewal period, may be carried over to the next renewal period.
  • Credit will not be given for a course that is repeated within a 2 year period.


  • Individuals licensed exclusively for the sale of legal expense insurance, title insurance, travel baggage insurance, surety bonds, bail bonds, and credit life/accident & health insurance.
  • Individuals who are at least 62 years old and whose combined total continuous years of license plus their age equals 85 or more.
  • Newly licensed individuals are exempt for the calendar year in which they are first licensed. Beginning January 1 of the year following licensing they must comply with continuing education requirements.
  • Non-resident agents who meet their home state CE requirements. 

Method to Certify Completion:

  • For Most States you will be able to print your certificate of completion online once you have completed your exam.
  • We usually report to the State Department of Insurance or regulatory board by the next business day.
  • The licensee transfers information from the certificates of completion to North Dakota’s summary report form.
  • It may, however, take your State DOI or regulatory board up to 30 days to report your completion results on their systems.
