Connecticut Insurance CE Requirement


Insurance Continuing Education 

  • 24 hours biennially - Of the total, a minimum of six credit hours are required for each line of authority held by the producer on the first day of each biennium.

Life/Health License only- 6 Life/Health, 3 LRE, 15 Optional

P&C License only – 6 P&C (3 hours of Flood required, one-time only), 3 LRE, 15 Optional

Life/Health and P&C License – 6 Life/Health, 6 P&C (3 hours of Flood required, one-time only), 3 LRE, 9 Optional



New Requirement to Sell Annuities in Connecticut


Effective March 1st, 2022:

  • - A producer who completes an annuity training course approved by the commissioner prior to the effective date of this regulation shall, within six (6) months after 3/01/2022, complete either:


~~ A new four (4) CE credit training course approved by the commissioner after the effective date of this regulation; or
~~ An additional one-time one (1) CE credit training course approved by the commissioner and provided by the continuing education provider on appropriate sales practices, replacement and disclosure requirements under sections 38a-432a-1 to 38a-432a-8, inclusive, of the Regulations of Connecticut State Agencies.


- Producers who hold a life insurance line of authority on the effective date of this regulation and who desire to sell annuities shall complete the requirements of this subsection within six (6) months after the effective date of this regulation. Individuals who obtain a life insurance line of authority on or after the effective date of this regulation may not engage in the sale of annuities until the annuity training course required under this subsection has been completed.

  • - Licensees who have not completed a 4-hour annuity course must take the annuity best interest course prior to selling annuities.

- The satisfaction of the components of the training requirements of any course or courses with components substantially similar to the provisions of this subsection shall be deemed to satisfy the training requirements of this subsection in this state.

Continuing Education State Specific Courses:

  • 3 hours must be in CE insurance law & regulation and/or ethics.
  • At least 6 hours must be taken in each line for which the producer is licensed
  • All Connecticut licensed resident insurance producers with Property,Casualty or Personal Lines authority must complete a one-time 3 credit NFIP Flood insurance course approved by the Connecticut Insurance Department.


Renewal or Compliance Date for Licensees:

  • Compliance deadline is license renewal date which is the producer's birth date.
  • All CT resident producers with standard license are required to complete 24 credit hours of continuing education.


Types of Courses Accepted:

  • Classroom, Independent self-study, and Seminars.


Monitor Requirements

  • Online & paper exams MUST Be monitored by an impartial and disinterested person who shall not be in the direct line of supervision of any person taking the examination, nor have any financial interest in the success of any persons taking the examination.


Reporting to Your State
$3.75 per course is required to report to your state.
  • State Insurance completions are reported 2 times every business day. If course is completed after 2 PM PT, it will be reported the following business day.

  • CFP reports are sent on Friday at 2 PM PT to the CFP Board electronically.

  • You may also self-report your CFP completions to www.cfp.net


Carryover Hours & Course Repetition

  • 24 hours of excess CE credit hours may be carried over to the next reporting period.
  • Courses may not be taken more than once in each reporting period.


Exemptions:

  • Producers who only hold Surety Bail Bond license, limited lines of authority such as, Credit and Accident/Travel Baggage.
  • Casualty Adjusters.


Method to Certify Completion:

  • For Most States you will be able to print your certificate of completion online once you have completed your exam.
  • We usually report to the State Department of Insurance or regulatory board by the next business day.

Nonresidents:


  • Initial LTC Requirement: Any non-resident selling, soliciting or negotiating LTC insurance products in Connecticut must comply with resident requirements.

  • On-going LTC Requirement: Any non-resident selling, soliciting or negotiating LTC insurance products in Connecticut must comply with resident requirements.
